OUR SUSTAINABILITY ENGAGEMENTS

“We want to offer you a quality surfing experience with a minimal climate & environmental impact”
Wabi Surf House owners

HERE ARE A FEW IMPROVEMENTS WE MADE & ENGAGEMENTS FROM OUR SIDE:

sea-waves.png

close to the sea

by being at walking distance from a surf spot you will not have to drive to practice your favourite activity

stove.png

woodstove

the woodstove converts roughly 80% of the wood's organic matter to heat. To put that number into perspective, fireplaces have an average efficiency of around 20%.

green-energy.png

green power

we have a renewable electricity contract with our energy supplier. Although the electricity does not immediately come from our own solar panels, buying renewable energy from your energy supplier stimulates the demand for renewable energy investments & projects in France.

logs.png

wood

at Wabi surf house we only use FSC or PEFC local wood from renewable sources that does not contribute to deforestation.

plugin.png

no fossil fuels

there is no more gas (fossil fuel) use in the Wabi surf house. We have replaced all gas cooking by electric cooking (induction).

drops.png

water

In 2022 we will install a waterfilter for the tapwater so you don’t have to buy plastic or glass bottles.

heater.png

heaters

in the coming years we will progressively  replace the electrical heaters by more efficient ones. Note that most of the electricity in France is produced from nuclear plants, but as explained we have chosen for renewable energy.

beds

made by a local artisan from Bretagne (Brittany), France.

recycle.png

re-use

much of the decoration & furniture is being reused

tree planting

per person staying at Wabi Surf House we will plant a tree with

Of course, there are still a few improvements to make that we will progressively implement as we bought the house in December 2021

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL & CLIMATE IMPACT OF YOUR STAY:

  1. Transport: the biggest impact of your stay will probably come from the way you make it to the Wabi Surf House in Pors Carn, Penmarch, ‘Finistère Sud’ in Brittany, France. People usually make it here by car as the is no TGV station or Airport in the close area. This is also why it is so calm & quiet here. It is always a trade-off. The more you are in a car to come here the lower the CO2-impact per person. There is a train station at Quimper (with good connections to / from Paris). Quimper to Wabi Surf House in Pors Carn is approximately a 25min drive. If you fly to a close airport try to calculate & offset your climate impact with www.greentripper.org

  2. Walk or bike when possible, the walking is fantastic around here. Keep walking !

  3. Reduce your impact while at Wabi Surf House:

    1. Food  & Drinks:

                                                             i.      Eat seasonal, organic, vegetarian & local foods when possible. Buying locally grown produce
whenever possible drastically reduces the emissions caused by freight shipping. Plus, it’s a
great way to support your community’s economy!
ii.      Clean up your caffeine: Reduce your paper waste by using biodegradable coffee filters and tea
                                                                      bags.

iii.      Water: Minimize your carbon footprint with a reusable water bottle!
iv.      Eat less dairy. I know, who doesn’t love ice cream? But an Oxford University study shows that
reducing your dairy intake is one of the greatest ways you can reduce your carbon footprint.
                                                            v.      Avoid using disposable straws. Get a reusable one instead!
vi.     Ditch plastic cutlery and paper plates. Consider reusable or compostable tableware instead to
reduce your carbon footprint and the amount of plastic in landfills.
vii.      Eat less meat. Animal agriculture represents approximately 18% of carbon emissions
worldwide. That’s more than every single car, bus, train, boat, and airplane on the planet--
                                                                    combined.
viii.      Limit your use of palm oil. Palm oil contributes to deforestation and, consequently, the habitat
loss of several endangered species, like the pygmy elephant.

               2.  Cleaning: Do your laundry less. When doing laundry, make sure to use cold water. Line-dry your clothes when possible
in our climate. Skipping the dryer can reduce the carbon footprint of your clothing by as much as 33%!

               3.  Going Shopping
: buy locally, they have very good local products here ! Avoid fast fashion, Bring a reusable bag to the
grocery store. Consume less & better, Opt for quality rather than quantity to cut down your carbon footprint. Avoid buying
products with excessive packaging. Check out carbon-conscious companies. Rethink your Toilet Paper: Buy plastic-free toilet
              paper rolls.
Make the switch from single-use to sustainable. Be a conscious consumer. Buying from companies that support a
low-carbon future can reduce the environmental impact of your shopping habits in the long run. Use natural cleaning
products. Make a statement with your purchases.
